At “Don’t Be Fooled by Disinfo!” on April 1, Katie Sanders, the editor-in-chief of PolitiFact, told an appreciative audience of 80 people at the University of Connecticut that her website has fact-checked 30,000 political statements and social media posts since its founding in 2007.
She offered ‘three questions to live by” before sharing posts online. Who is behind the post? What is the evidence, and what do other sources say?
Sanders said that PolitiFact, which was the first website to win a Pulitzer Prize, has no agenda and is steadfastly nonpartisan.
“The truth is our agenda,” she said. “Lies can hurt people. Lies have consequences. It’s very important to remain vigilant.
“The event was sponsored by the UConn Journalism and Political Science departments, the UConn Humanities Institute, the Alan R. Bennett Political Science Honors Fund, the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government and the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
